Hill International to manage new Masdar City project

US-based project manager Hill International has won a contract to oversee the construction of the latest phase of development at Masdar City.

The company has gained a three-year, Dh12.2m contract to project manage the construction of Masdar Institute Neighbourhood — a new, mixed, use project containing more than 1.1 million sq ft of space including a new commercial office building, two residential blocks, a plaza and underground parking.

Masdar Institute Neighbourhood has been designed to achieve a three-pearl rating system under Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council’s Estidama sustainability ratings, and LEED Gold certification through the US Green Building Council.

Mohammed Al Rais, the regional president for Hill International’s project management group, said: “Masdar City is a model for sustainable urban development not just regionally but globally. We are extremely proud to have been selected to help Masdar deliver this important project.”

Meanwhile, building materials giant Saint Gobain recently announced that it had signed an agreement with Masdar City to build a “Multi-Comfort House” at the site. The company is aiming, through use of its building materials, to design a home that produces more energy than it consumes.

Saint Gobain has developed “Multi-Comfort” properties elsewhere in the world, but it said this would be the first such property in the Middle East, and the first to be specifically adapted to the arid conditions in the UAE. It aims to achieve comfort across four dimensions: light, air quality, acoustics and thermal conditions.

Masdar’s executive director of sustainable real estate, Yousef Baselaib, said: “Masdar City is a hub for innovation and sustainability, and a natural home for Saint-Gobain to showcase its state-of-the-art capabilities in sustainable living.”
