Nakheel begins work on Ibn Battuta mall expansion

Nakheel has started construction work on its latest planned Dh850 million expansion at its Ibn Battuta shopping mall complex in Dubai.

The Dubai Government-owned developer said that construction work on its second Ibn Battuta mall expansion started after it awarded a contract worth nearly Dh23m to Dubai-based National Gulf Constructions for enabling works at the site.

Nakheel said the new development would include a 55-storey residential tower comprising 279 apartments to be known as Ibn Battuta Residences 2, a 16-screen cinema complex and 53,000 square feet of shop space.

In September, Nakheel unveiled images for a first set of twin residential towers at the mall, Ibn Battuta Residences, two towers of 531 apartments next to Ibn Battuta Mall, which the company plans to complete at the end of 2019.

Nakheel said that together the three new towers would have 810 apartments between them.

A first phase of expansion at the shopping mall comprising a 300,000 sq ft retail extension, a 210-metre link to the Dubai Metro and a 372-room hotel, opened last year.

Nakheel also plans to expand the mall further to about 1 million sq ft and plans to build a retractable roof for year-round shopping and dining, and a second hotel.

Last year, Nakheel said it was planning to expand its leasing portfolio from about 18,000 homes at the moment to about 36,000 over the next five years.
